Raiders looking to deal Russell

The Oakland Raiders could trade or release quarterback JaMarcus Russell in the coming weeks.

The Raiders want Russell to take a significant paycut in order to stay with the team, something he is unlikely to do.

The team has been very unhappy with Russell’s work ethic, although he did report to OTA’s in much better shape this year.

The team has an extremely crowded quarterback situation with Russell, Bruce Gradkowski, Jason Campbell and Kyle Boller.

Should Russell take a pay cut, the Raiders would likely release Boller, who just recently signed with the team.

Raiders take McClain at No. 8

The Oakland Raiders finally made a logical first-round pick, selecting linebacker Rolando McClain.

It may have been a slight reach to take McClain so early at No. 8 overall, but he is a quality player.

The Raiders certainly need help at the linebacker position, and McClain will more than fill that hole.

He was a star player for the Alabama Crimson Tide and helped lead them to a national championship.

McClain did not seem thrilled about being selected by the Raiders, but I’m sure that disappointment will eventually wear off.

Raiders get Campbell from Redskins

The Oakland Raiders have acquired quarterback Jason Campbell from the Washington Redskins for a fourth round pick in 2012.

The Raiders may have given up a little too much to get Campbell, but at least the pick is a couple years away.

Campbell will instantly come in and become Oakland’s starting quarterback, replacing the current duo they have.

Many point to Campbell’s steady improvement through his NFL career as a sign that he could do well with the Raiders.

He is certainly excited to get a chance to start again after losing his job to Donovan McNabb.

Oakland Raiders schedule released

The Oakland Raiders 2010 schedule has been released and certainly isn’t overwhelming, even for a team has failed to make the playoffs for several years.

The Raiders begin the year with a road game at Tennessee followed by a very winnable game at home against the St. Louis Rams. If Oakland can’t at least start 1-1, it’s going to be a very long season.

Home games against Seattle, Kansas City and Denver and road games against the Chiefs, Jaguars and 49ers are good chances for victories.

The Raiders do have to play San Diego twice, at Arizona and Indianapolis at home, but it could be a lot worse.

One interesting thing about Oakland’s schedule is that they will not play in a single primetime game. For a team as popular as the Raiders, that is surprising.

Raiders sign Boller

The Oakland Raiders have signed quarterback Kyle Boller to a contract to add depth at the position. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Bruce Gradkowski, who was expected to compete for the starting job, tore his pectoral muscle while lifting weights during offseason workouts.

Gradkowski is expected to make a recovery and should be ready in time for training camp, but Boller gives the team some insurance in case those plans change.

Boller is a former first-round draft pick who always had a lot of talent, but for some reason was never able to put it all together.

He struggled much of the time in Baltimore before signing with the St. Louis Rams as a backup to Marc Bulger. He did get some starts in St. Louis, but proved ineffective.

Gradkowski tears pectoral muscle

Oakland Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski tore his pectoral muscle lifting weights during offseason workouts and will be sidelined indefinitely.

The Raiders are hopeful that they can get Gradkowski back and 100 percent healthy in time for the start of training camp in late July.

He is expected to compete with JaMarcus Russell for the starting quarterback job this summer, so the Raiders are definitely concerned.

Gradkowski will undergo surgery and should be able to start throwing again in about four weeks, which should give him enough time to be ready for the training camp battle.

The team signed Kyle Boller to a contract as insurance in case Gradkowski is unable to return as soon as expected.

Raiders re-sign Walker

The Oakland Raiders have re-signed offensive tackle Langston Walker.

Walker was cut by the Buffalo Bills at the end of training camp last season, but played seven games for the Raiders.

He could have a chance to regain a starting spot on the offensive line, but would have to compete with a couple of other players.

Feel free to insert your own joke here about the Raiders being desperate enough to pick up someone cut by the Bills.

Walker had signed a big deal with the Bills back in 2007, but failed to live up to the deal and was promptly released.

Raiders favorite to land McNabb

The Oakland Raiders have emerged as the favorite to land Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

The Raiders own the 39th overall pick in the draft, and the Eagles have made it known they will take nothing less than the 42nd overall selection.

McNabb has made it clear that he wishes to stay in Philadelphia but would reluctantly accept a trade to a contender.

Last time I checked, unfortunately for McNabb, the Raiders were much closer to a bottom-feeder than a contender.

Other teams remain interested in McNabb, but it remains unknown if they will choose to top Oakland’s offer.
