The Oakland Raiders lost as much of a heartbreaker as possible in the preseason to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night, dropping a 21-20 contest on a failed two-point conversion by Charlie Frye with 3:30 to go in the game.
JaMarcus Russell ended up completing seven of 11 passes for 76 yards with a 24-yard TD to WR Louis Murphy. He stumbled early, missing first round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey on third down on his first drive, then tripping over RB Darren McFadden on third down of the second drive.
Russell eventually found a rhythm, starting with a 12-yarder to TE Zach Miller, followed by an 11-yard pass to RB Justin Fargas and a 22-yard pass interference call against Nate Clements. Russell found Murphy on a third-and-21 for his only completion to a wideout all night.
Backup QB Jeff Garcia debuted in Oakland colors to a less-than-optimal outcome, throwing a pick in his only series on the field.

This one is turning uglier and uglier.
According to a story reported by AOL’s Fanhouse and picked up by the other major sports sites, Raiders coach Tom Cable was involved in a locker room incident with defensive assistant Randy Hanson, where Hanson suffered a broken jaw.
ESPN cited a National Football Post entry on Thursday that reported that the Napa, Calif. police are about to get involved in the situation due to Randy Hanson’s cooperation in telling them who broke his jaw, which turns bad to worse for Cable if the allegations are true.
Conflicting reports have come out about exactly how Hanson’s jaw was broken. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Hanson hit his face on a cabinet after Cable flipped his chair over in a meeting room during training camp; the National Football Post also reported that Cable choked Hanson and threatened to kill him.
If Cable is found guilty of breaking Hanson’s jaw, he could be potentially charged with a felony.
